Did you know that auto insurance companies significantly changed the way that they price policies over the last few years? The company that offered you the best rate a few years ago may no longer have the best deal for you. Bellow, I have put together a list of things that you can do that will help you find cheaper car insurance.

1. Shop around - The most important step is to shop around. Prices on auto insurance can vary by hundreds of dollars from company to company, for the exact same person and car, depending on the claims experience that the company has had. Some companies have changed the way that they price policies over the last few years, while others haven't. If you have a good credit record, and a good driving record, you may get a much better deal with some of the companies that have changed their rates.

2. Improve your credit score - One important way to improve your auto insurance rate is to improve your credit score. That's one of the biggest changes that insurance companies have made over the last few years. Almost all of them look at your credit score while setting your rate, and many of them look in great detail at your credit score. First of all make sure you pay your bills on time, even if you're not getting ready to shop for a loan. You can also check out your credit report at annual credit report .com to make sure that there aren't any inaccuracies that are causing you to have a lower rate then you should.

3. Buy a safer car - It is also very important to buy a safe car. Having a safe car makes more of a difference in your premiums then it has in the past. You can visit web sites like car safety .org and get crash test results for the car that you are considering buying.

4. Hunt for discounts - If you have a young driver they can generally get a discount if they have a B average or better in school, or if they take a special defensive driving course offered by the insurance company. You may also be able to get a discount if you drive your car less than 75,000 miles a year. You may also be able to lower your rate by purchasing your auto and home insurance from the same company.

Hopefully knowing these things will help you on your search for cheaper insurance. From my own personal experience the saying "Knowledge Is Power", could not be any truer. It is very important to be educated when making decisions that will ultimately affect your life.
